Agnes Martin in Los Angeles

Taos icon has retrospective exhibition at LACMA

By Janet Webb – July 18, 2016

This is an iPhone photo post. Although I am very familiar with Agnes Martin’s  grid paintings in the Agnes Martin Gallery of the Harwood Museum of Art in Taos, I had no idea how massive her body of work was by the end of her lifetime (1912-2004). This exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art presents well over a hundred paintings and drawings, and a few sculptures, (but only one photo of Agnes, an odd decision in my opinion) by the artist who spent many years in Taos.

The exhibition is up through September 11, 2016. If you can, get there.

In Taos, don’t miss two important presentations about Agnes Martin, the human being:

The big surprise: running into Jina Brenneman with Greg Nelson. Jina curated the exhibition, "Agnes Martin Before the Grid" for Harwood Museum and is working on a documentary of the same name with Kathleen Brennan.

The big surprise: running into Jina Brenneman with Greg Nelson, visiting LA and the exhibition from Taos! Jina curated the 2012 exhibition, “Agnes Martin Before the Grid” for Harwood Museum and is working on a documentary of the same name with Kathleen Brennan.

At right, my favorite drawing, a surprising little line drawing, about 4 x 5 inches. And, below, my favorite people-watching moment, a little out-of-focus.
