Mother’s Day weekend, Friday May 6th through Sunday the 8th, offers a slew of events and activities in Taos and surrounding communities for moms of all ages and interests. Here’s a list that includes not only Taos but Angel Fire, the High Road, Ojo, Abiquiu, and Farmington, all pulled from BeyondTaos’s calendar and Taos Art Calendar.

Enjoy an art show and wine tasting, Run for the Roses Derby viewing party, and Sunday Brunch to celebrate your win. Sponsored by Angel Fire Rotary Club to benefit Big Brother Big Sisters and the National Veterans Wellness Center. Location: Angel Fire Resort.

Spring Arts & Crafts Fair and Northern NM Mother’s Day Concert
One location (Kit Carson Park); two great events. The crafts fair has been presented every year since 1971 by Taos County Chamber of Commerce. Local and regional artisans display and sell pottery, food products, textiles, paintings and photography, handmade toys, and more. Open 10:00am to 5:00 each day.
The music fest presents live entertainment all three days from traditional New Mexico-style musicians, Tejano, classic rock, and country and is a project of LMNOC Broadcasting. Music begins at 4:00pm Friday; noon on Saturday and Sunday. Location: Kit Carson Park.

Mother’s Day Rio Grande Whitewater Festival
Three days of fun for moms who love to be outdoors. Whitewater races, river-side rendezvous, rodeo events, guided hikes and competitions for rafts, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. Sponsored by New Mexico River Outfitter Association.

Young Artists Reception: Anything is Possible Show
Art by the children in Taos Municipal Schools through the Elementary Arts Visiting Artist Program. A reception for the children, families, and public includes live cello music by Rebecca Caron; poetry readings by the children; and dancer Catalina Rio Fernandez teaching and demonstrating Flamenco techniques. 1:00-4:00pm. Location: Hacienda de los Martinez

El Rito Artists are opening their studios the first Saturday of every month from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Follow the signs through town. Mother’s Day at the Lavender Farm
Stroll through the lavender fields. Shop for farm-made lavender body, bath and culinary products, have a tasty, gluten-free lunch and healthy lavender goodies on the deck of the Tea House, then buy lavender plant starts in the nursery. Mother’s Day Brunch in Ghost Ranch-Ojo Area:

Farm to Table program uses seasonal farm produce whenever possible. Menus highlight vegetarian entrees and a salad bar is featured at lunch and dinner each day. Meals are served cafeteria style, with choice of indoor or outdoor dining. Lunch: $11, Noon-1:00pm, Dinner: $13, 5:30-6:30pm. 505-685-1000.

The Artesian Restaurant at Ojo Caliente
Take mom for a soak in Ojo’s soothing mineral springs then have lunch (11:30-2:30pm) or dinner (5:00-9:00pm) in the Artesian. The chef describes the menu as “a delightful range of seasonal Southwestern favorites to a variety of international fare.” A wine bar adjoins the restaurant. 505-583-2233


FARMINGTON
May 7
Cinco de Mayo Fiesta
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Mariachi bands, folk dancing, jalapeno eating contest, Chihuahua races, food vendors, and salsa cook off. Noon to 6pm. Location: Farmington Civic Center

While in Farmington, visit Gateway to the Imagination, a juried art show that features paintings, watercolor, sculptures, photographs and mixed media works by nationally-recognized artists. It is on view 8:00 to 5:00pm at Farmington Museum and Visitor Center. 505-599-1174.
