Snowmaking Begins at Sipapu for November 15 Opening - Sipapu Ski & Summer Resort

Posted Oct 14, 2014

The sprint to open New Mexico's ski slopes has officially begun.

With fall temperatures dipping below freezing last night, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort began snowmaking operations early this morning as the resort prepares to be the first ski area open in New Mexico for the 12th consecutive year. Resort officials say the lifts will start turning on Saturday, November 15.

"While the snow was falling at Sipapu this morning, today is an important day for both Sipapu and Pajarito," said marketing director Stacey Glaser. "We are excited to see this first glimpse of winter at Sipapu and couldn't be more excited our guests will have access to the combined 81 trails, 10 lifts and nearly 1,000 acres at Pajarito and Sipapu."

The management group that operates Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort will operate Pajarito Mountain Ski Area for the 2014-2015 winter season and beyond. Last spring, the Los Alamos Ski Club unanimously voted to transfer the ski area to the Sipapu Group and Los Alamos County. Resort officials expect to have an executed contract in place before the ski season begins.

As part of Sipapu and Pajarito's joint operations, the two ski areas recently unveiled the New Mexico Power Pass, the state's only season pass that provides unlimited skiing and snowboarding at two New Mexico mountains plus free lift tickets at over 20 partner ski areas in New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and throughout the country. Glaser said the Power Pass is on sale through October 26 and may be purchased at,, or at the season pass office at both ski areas.

With Sipapu scheduled to begin turning the lifts on November 15, resort officials say they are gunning for an early start for Pajarito, too: the Los Alamos ski area's scheduled start date is Thanksgiving Day, November 27.

Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort is located 20 miles southeast of Taos and just over two hours north of Albuquerque. Based out of Los Alamos, Pajarito Mountain Ski Area is just over one hour north of Albuquerque. For more information about Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort, call 800-587-2240 or visit
