Taos is a place where artists live and work. Many artists use Taos solely as a place to create, a place where they can control their distractions and find inspiration from nature and solitude. When it comes time to take their art to market, many Taos artists exhibit and sell elsewhere.
June’s post about Taos artists showing elsewhere includes Hank Saxe again, this time in Denver; Brian Shields also exhibited in that city during June. Walt Gonske has a major retrospective in Santa Fe. Larry Bell currently has shows in Aspen, Los Angeles and Tampa, Florida – and here in Taos at the Harwood Museum of Art.
Below is a look at the work these artists are exhibiting.
A note to all Taos artists: please let me know (editor@beyondtaos.com) about your exhibits outside of Taos – where, when, and what you’re showing. I find it amazing how many of you quietly work in this community then take the work to other cities for exhibition and sale. It’s a testament to the creative inspiration of this Place.
Hank Saxe in Denver
William Havu Gallery, June 15 to 28, 2018

The gallery’s statement about Hank’s show: “This introductory show will feature fourteen of Saxe’s ceramic sculptures on the mezzanine gallery. Hank Saxe has been working on ceramics for over four decades in Taos, NM. He states, “A fascination with natural sciences led me to ceramics, an original meeting ground of art and technology. Starting out, I didn’t know how clays and minerals worked, but I thought I’d better figure out how to use that stuff. Still working on figuring that out, my sculptures are outcomes of investigation into process and materials and experimental interactions of form, color and texture.”
Brian Shields in Denver
Michael Warren Contemporary, May 8 – June 16, 2018
60 Santa Fe Drive, Denver, CO 80204
303-635-6255
Brian says of these paintings, “My paintings and works on paper are an expression of energy, emotion, and fuerza. They often begin with an image from nature or a color I am drawn to, a mood or a feeling left over from a dream, or in reaction to other creative expressions. “
Walt Gonske in Santa Fe
Nedra Matteucci Galleries, June 23 to July 21, 2018
1075 Paseo de Peralta • Santa Fe • New Mexico • 87501
505-982-4631, inquiry@matteucci.com
The gallery’s statement: “Walt Gonske has painted on location for over four decades, working in wind, sun, and snow. Through an expressive brush he captures his experience of a place: light and color, movement and mood. Each painting is a meditation on mood, and an example of his ever-deepening relationship with his preferred subject matter. This retrospective exhibition consists of personally selected works from the artist’s own collection, and is a long-awaited testament to his artistic vision and supreme dedication.”
I’ve selected four of over 30 paintings in the show. All were painted in the Taos area, one in each decade, the 70s through 2000.
