70 miles north, 1 hr 30 min drive time, of Santa Fe. Elevation: 6,952 ft; Population: 5,710 town, 32,947 county (2010).

HISTORY
Taos is an artist’s colony with a 400-year-old Spanish heritage and 1,000-year old American Indian culture. This tri-cultural blend creates a unique community of regional foods, arts, celebrations, and lifestyles.

LANDSCAPE
A year-round recreation destination— whitewater rafting in spring, hiking, trout fishing and mountain biking in summer and fall, and deep powder and endless skiing and snowboarding trails through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

MUST SEE, MUST DO
Festivals throughout the year celebrating Hispanic traditions, art fairs, music festivals, American Indian ceremonial dances, and cozy yuletide events. Historic Plaza, art and history museums, and world-famous St. Francis of Assis church.
